Going Cowboy Boots Shopping? How to Get a Great Fit
Sunday, March 29, 2009
If you’re in search of the perfect pair of cowboy boots, you’ll want to be sure you find a well-made boot with high quality craftsmanship so that you’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come. But especially if you’re unaccustomed to the way cowboy boots fit, it’s a wise idea to visit a western wear or western apparel store to try them on, even if you’re planning on purchasing them online. You can always try them on in the store, write down the brand, style, and size of the boot, and then purchase them from your favorite online western wear store.
The size of boot you seek depends on the shape of the toe on the pair of cowboy boots and the shape of your foot. A rounder toed cowboy boot will likely be more “true to size,” or fitting like a regular shoe, while a more pointed tie means there’s a narrower space between the tip of the boot and where your toes begin. If you’re interested in the more traditional, pointed toe cowboy boot, choose a half size larger than your normal size—this should remedy the problem of discomfort by providing more space between the toe and the tip of the boot. If you have wide feet, rounded toe cowboy boots are probably your better option as they’re wider. But if you have wide feet and still want pointed toe boots, you’ll likely need a larger size than you normally wear to give your foot plenty of room.
Particularly if you purchase leather cowboy boots, they’ll stretch out over time as the leather becomes softer and they mold to your foot. It’s a good rule of thumb to buy boots that are a little snug to leave a margin for breaking them in; if the boots are already a little loose when you buy them, they may become too loose over time to wear comfortably. You should be able to easily slide your foot in and out of your boots, and the seam (where the long shaft of the boot attaches to the foot) should provide support but also be slightly loose, without pinching.
Your local western wear store will likely have an experienced sales staff that can help you find a pair of cowboy boots that fit just right, and maybe even some western apparel to go along with your new boots. If you’re really in search of the perfect fit, you can always get a pair of custom fit cowboy boots tailored specifically to fit your feet.
