Cowboy boots are the perfect example of how function can develop into fashion and remain fashionable for years to come. Of course, the original function for which the item was designed still being applicable, such as in the case of cowboy boots, is quite helpful, and perhaps even necessary. But let's back up a little.

It is the 1860s and the cattle drives are beginning. The men working them are, at this point, wearing boots that are modeled after (or actually are) military riding boots. These boots are not suited for the long trail rides on horseback and the hazards that one comes across in this new and rather wild territory. Legend has it that it was actually a single man who commissioned a pair of boots that became the model for cowboy boots. These boots had several different aspects that made them better for the work that needed to be done.

Among these differences were:

* A tall, stiff leather shaft on the boot. This protected the ankle and leg from a variety of things- irritation from the stirrups, snakes, briars, barbed wire, even from getting wet while crossing rivers.
* A design that meant the boot could be pulled on and off. This was less for convenience and more for safety- if a cowboy's horse panicked or threw him and his boot became tangled in the stirrup, he could pull his foot free from the boot and get out of harm's way.
* A stacked heel that was angled to give the rider more control in the saddle, also making it easier for cowboys to keep their feet in the stirrups.
* A pointed toe that made sliding their feet into and out of stirrups easier.

Later, when the rodeo circuit became a way of life- certainly a branching out from the usual cowboy occupations- roper boots appeared. In general, these boots have a shorter shaft (far fewer dangers in a rodeo than on the trail) and they also have a different shaped heel, better for running, which can certainly be a very valuable and necessary skill for rodeo riders and ropers.

The fact that the wild wild west captured the imaginations of several generations and still speak to us of a time when life was simple, yet no less difficult. It speaks of a time when we, as a country, did not yet know our own boundaries, and were full of the excitement that comes with exploration. That fantasy continues to capture us today, which is why you'll see western wear and cowboy boots all over the country and not just where they are needed.

The color, length, fabric, style and overall fit are what will make your dress a success. Here are 10 tips you need to know before you go shopping:

1. The first tip is more of a reminder, perhaps. (Make that several reminders!) You need a firm budget so you don’t waste time on a designer gown you can’t afford. You also need to know your best and worst colors, what designs and features work best with your body type, how to recognize quality clothing and so on. If you feel less than qualified in any of these areas, by all means get good advice – and take it.

2. Bring the shoes that you’re going to wear along with you. You need to make sure that the dress is the right length for the heel height, and that the colors match or coordinate correctly. Remember that your shoes must coordinate with more than just the color(s) of the dress. You need to be in balance style-wise, too. In fact, your shoes are very important to your choice of a final dress.

4. Of course, there is going to be dancing at the prom. Be sure that your dress fits right in relation to the top of your shoe. Otherwise it might be the hem of your dress that you dance on all night instead of the parquet floor.

5. If the dress ties in the back, make sure that it is done in a way that is going to be secure over a period of time, and in different positions (sitting, dancing, walking). Some girls will use a hidden safety pin, discreetly placed, to ensure that the back of the dress stays closed. After all, you don’t want that date of yours, or anyone else, getting any funny ideas.

6. If the dress happens to be strapless, make sure that the front of the dress fits right. Otherwise this can turn into a real embarrassment. Remember, too, that you will not be able to wear a regular bra with a strapless dress, as well as those with “spaghetti straps.” There are a few different kinds of “partial” or “strapless” bras that you might consider using, and some dresses come with “integral cups” for shaping and support.

7. Consider every type of fabric and style combination to find the dress that best fits your body type. For example, an empire-line dress is great for disguising a bigger waistline or tummy, while big hips are often camouflaged by a stovepipe midsection of satin fabric. “Clingy” and form-fitting clothes, of any kind, are not the best ideas for everyone.

8. Sweetheart necklines flatter almost any chest or neck and they can look quite becoming on almost any young lady. The neckline is very important, as it teams up with your hairstyle to frame your face.

9. If your neck is of the longer variety, definitely avoid plunging necklines. They can make your neck look even longer than it actually is and you certainly don’t want that. Conversely, if you have a short neck, a plunging neckline can help, as long as it is done in good taste and in accordance with the other considerations.

10. Look for a dress that puts the emphasis on your best feature. Whether it be the unique color of your eyes or your dramatic hourglass figure, part of your decision should be based on how well the dress “accentuates the positive.” And remember the saying, “You should wear the dress, the dress should not wear you.” This will help you feel great about how you look, as the focus will be on the positive things you accentuate, as opposed to other things that you may not like as much.

If you really have bad luck and can’t find anything you like, you might have to consider buying a pattern and having a dressmaker make it for you. You might expect this to be quite costly but, in fact, it’s more affordable than you may think. EBay is a huge “virtual mall,” as everyone should know by now, and is a good place to seek out unusual or retro patterns and fabrics. If you go this route, you certainly won’t get to the prom and see another girl in the exact same dress.

It seems that this is the only genre of fashion that, no matter how it evolves over time, will remain stylish and timeless despite the ebb and flow of popular trends. If you're looking for some indication of what will be fashionable in 2009, look no further than the runways of the world's fashion capitols: Milan, Paris, New York, Tokyo and LA. It was a memorable Christmas party. Yes memorable indeed! At 4oo9 Rose Lane, the state of Virginia, Mr. Brad and Mrs. Laurie Chittenden were hosting in their newly constructed home. Now party was at its peak and we were examining the crockery in China hutch. My spouse was amused and reading “Chittenden” brands every where. Finally she looked at Mrs. Laurie and splashed at brands. Mrs. Laurie opened her lips and muttered few words, they were “brandable.com”. Later on Eng. How to Dress in Western Apparel

I was born and raised in Texas. In fact, I currently live in San Antonio. Everyday, I see men and women dressed in Versace and Gucci. Of course, I also see cowboy hats, cowboy boots, and rodeo buckles, too. It seems that there is a widespread myth that in Texas, it's the norm to dress in rugged western wear all the time. The fact of the matter is, Texans are actually quite fashionable. Dressing in western apparel is a choice that many individuals make--and most of them do it in a way that is tasteful and stylish.

Don't get me wrong, there is that "real cowboy" look that is not meant to be a fashion statement at all. It is worn out of necessity of one's job. Ranch hands, for instance, wear chaps (a leather garment worn from the belt downward surrounding the legs to protect them from the elements of the range). Chaps are usually worn over a durable pair of woven jeans and cowboy boots. A high quality, long-sleeved cotton shirt is often worn in addition, sometimes with a vest.

Now, the basic Texan style would consist of a bright-colored or pastel long-sleeved shirt, jeans, cowboy boots, a big rodeo buckle and a cowboy hat. This basic western wear style is a fashion statement of sorts, but should not be mistaken for the Rhinestone or Urban Cowboy look that comprises yet another way of dressing in western apparel. At social events here in Texas, you will often see the Rhinestone Cowboy look. This consists of blue jeans, cowboy boots, a rhinestone-studded shirt, a cowboy hat, and often a bolo for good measure.

Native Texans like myself have witnessed a variety of western wear styles come and go over the years, and as far as I can tell in my old age, country and western has gone back to the more traditional look. Like any other fashion style, there are 'do's and don'ts' in western apparel. There is also a detailed etiquette to follow. For instance, a cowboy hat is an accessory, but it is considered a necessity to finish off the western wear look. But before you just go out and buy a hat, you should know the rules about them as they apply here in the Lone Star State. First, you never set a hat upside down. Put it on a peg--that way, it won't get dirty. Second, never put your hat on top of a bed. It's bad luck! Third, you have to practice putting your hat on with your three fingers holding the crease. Once you perfect that technique, you can put your hat on in true cowboy fashion.

Cowboy Boots In the City

If you've been looking around at people's feet lately, you might have noticed a trend. Cowboy boots are just about everywhere, whether you're on a ranch in Montana or walking the streets of New York City. In fact, elements of western wear show up just about everywhere you look, from the everyday style of the working class to the high end clothing that adorns celebrities. Western apparel has even been spotted on runways around the world. You know you've seen everything when you've seen Japanese pop culture combine with American western wear! Of course, with the continual evolution in fashion, we certainly haven't seen the last of such combinations.

Meanwhile, the origins of western apparel had absolutely nothing to do with style or high fashion, and everything to do with adapting to the needs of the men who were staking out the new American west and participating in the Great Cattle Drive of the mid-to-late 1860s. When the men of the cattle drive left, they were still wearing boots and clothing similar to that worn by the military. Military boots, while meant for time on horseback, were not suitable for riding the trail. The shaft was too short, the toe too wide and the heel not quite right for staying in the stirrups. Eventually, some wise cowboy commissioned a pair of boots with a high shaft, pointed toe, and stacked heel and thus, the cowboy boot was born.

The rest of the western wear get-up was born of a similar need; jeans were the main option for pants because of their durability, and likewise, chaps were developed to further protect a rider's legs and pants. The button up shirts and vests of the time were born in much the same way. You will notice that decorative options in western wear tend to come in the form of colorful stitching and inlays. This is because these are ways of adding aesthetic flair without changing anything about the actual design of the shirt- which is, after all, based on function.

While the cowboy used to be the icon for the most macho man around, today's culture is much more accepting of a wide range of people who have adapted this look. When it comes to cultural openness, just look at the movie Brokeback Mountain- a heartbreaking tale of two cowboys whose desires didn't fit within the acceptable range for their culture, one of whom gave up his life for that in the end. What does this mean? It doesn't have to mean anything, but if you want to take it as a sign that the American spirit is stronger than any stereotype, you certainly wouldn't be doing anyone any harm.
